The next film clip by my girl Jackie Ransom, from her upcoming album Cell Death. The song is about a giant fish that eats children, be afraid. No MP3 with this one, you will have to wait for the album to drop later in the year. Another sweet homemade video from Miss Ransom: she certainly has a way of making what was probably at one stage pretty innocent imagery look completely menacing. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!

My homeboy Spate hooked me up this link to Nightcrawla, a site dedicated to Philadelphia graffiti with emphasis on hardcore street bombing and Philly wickeds. Basically, some next level shit — menacing tags turning handstyles into wildstyles, even many writers find Philly tags illegible due to their complex letterforms, huge flares, tags that sometimes reach several metres high as well as smoking spliffs and brandishing butterfly knives. Heat. These cats rock can control in their tags that toys don’t even achieve in their pieces. Check it out at Nightcrawla Philadelphia Graffiti. The navigation is a bit frustrating but there is some primo shit if you can be bothered to lurk through it.

Gang Starr – Above The Clouds

I uploaded this track and had a post half written the day before I heard the news that Guru had gone into a coma after suffering a heart attack. At the time I was writing more about where my head was at, but once I heard that news I felt it wasn’t the time to be posting this track. Sadly, Guru lost his battle and passed away Monday February 19.

I’ve been a huge Gang Starr fan since the early 90s, bumping joints like Just To Get A Rep and Ex Girl To The Next Girl, but to me it was Moment of Truth that was Gang Starr at their finest, and to this day it is one of my all time favorite hip hop records. The Militia featuring Big Shug and Freddie Foxxx was pure hardcore street rap, straight fire. Above The Clouds with Inspectah Deck of Wu Tang Clan is a more melancholic joint showing off Guru’s deeper lyrical flows and You Know My Steez, The Rep Gets Bigger, She Knowz What She Wantz and the title track Moment Of Truth, to me, represent what real hip hop is all about. And as for the production by the man Dj Premier — shit is untouchable: every beat on that album is completely off the hook. Gang Starr were one of the most influential hip hop acts to come out of New York, and it’s not hard to see why.

In something much closer to home, my own old man suffered a heart attack over the weekend. The shock of hearing about somebody you have admired and being a fan of for years having a heart attack is one thing, but when it’s your own family shit is on a whole new level. Thankfully though I can say that he is ok, he needed three stents put into his heart but the doctors are pretty happy with how he is doing. Keep my Dad in your thoughts. One love

B-Boys B-Ware… Cold Crush is the electro funk driving ya’ll crazy and it is back this Friday night at 202 boogie down Broadway. We got Melbourne mix master Hysteric, the Cold Crush Mob — that’s me, OSC-001 and Simon Caldwell, and special guest, boogie king Sage One. We are gonna have asses shaking and bodies poppin’ and lockin’ from 9pm till late. We got more bounce to the ounce baby!

I just did an interview with Hysteric last night, and posted a fresh electro mix from him for Cold Crushin’ Mixes. Dude has been collecting records and doing his thang for many years now, so it’s a pretty cool interview for anybody into electro or record collecting… check it out over at Cold Crush.

I also just wrote an article for Cold Crush on punk pioneer and Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, who you may not know also recorded a couple of very cool old school hip hop records. Check it out the Buffalo Gals video clip, it is amazing… featuring bboying by the Rocksteady Crew but what is really incredible is the rare footage of all time graffiti style king Dondi White painting a public style burner reading Buffalo Gals in his trademark funked out style. Dudes letters are untouchable to this day, Style Master General is the word!

The party is promising a mashup of styles from ghetto tech, booty, dubstep, electro, techno and hip hop, and I’m gonna be setting shit off from 9 till 10:30. Entry is a cool $5 if you get there before 10 so you know what to do.

Jackie Ransom – Final Exposure

Miami might be best known for cocaine, vice, Miami Bass and sunshine, but what you might NOT be aware of is that there is some seriously dark and experimental wave music coming out of Miami. Probably the best known, is Staccato Du Mal — he had several tracks on each of the Wierd LPs, as well as a handful of great independently released 7″s and CDRs under various aliases and collaborations (including a beautiful 7″ with vocals by Liz Wendelbo of Xeno & Oaklander) on his own label SDM.

Another member of this lesser known Miami underground is Miss Jackie Ransom. Like Staccato Du Mal, Jackie shares a certain punk aesthetic to her music — using exclusively analogue instruments, including cheap synthesizers, lofi drummachines and guitar, all played live: one-take recordings of every track, often improvising with vocals and synth riffs as the track is coming along, making for a raw and unique sound.

Final Exposure is from Jackie’s upcoming album Cell Death. Featuring 8* (the vocalist from Flesh Græy Display) credited for vocals, guitar and mistake — yes you read that correctly. A duet of haunting vocals between Jackie and 8*, with dark and poetic lyrics with maybe just a slight nod to Joy Division.

The video clip was also made by Ms. Ransom herself, a disturbing collage of old archive video footage of hypnotism, psychology and sight, edited into a horrifying film noir nightmare. Once again that punk DIY aesthetic and imagination shines through, saying fuck to the million dollar video clips we are assaulted with any time we switch on a TV.

I have a split 7″ on the way with Miss Ransom, featuring her track Killer Inside (which will also appear on Cell Death and the upcoming Doom & Glamour album on Zerohour) and my track Eternal, with vocals from Beta Evers. Two great songs if I may say so myself, and it also features some beautiful artwork by the ever-amazing Caitlin Shearer. It will be released shortly on Zerohour so stay tuned baby!

Newcleus – Destination Earth

Got some sad news today that Chilly B, from New York old school rap crew Newcleus died yesterday of a stroke, at only age 47. It’s sad news for all electro funk and old school hip hop fans, Newcleus had some really huge hits in the early 80s…classic old tracks like Jam On It, and Jam On Revenge, I Wanna Be a B-Boy, Computer Age and I Am Not a Robot.

I’ve picked one of their lesser known tracks, from their first album Jam On Revenge, released in 1984. It’s much deeper and darker than most of the electro of its time, with live bass guitar (played by Chilly B), beautiful dark strings and arpeggio synth lines over a heavy drum track. It’s atmospheric and a little melancholy, and really I think it sounds more like the electro being produced in the last few years as opposed to something that’s nearly 30 years old now. A real future jam.

RIP Chilly B, my thoughts to your family and the rest of Newcleus.
